Clare House Play Garden

Clare House provides services that address the basic needs of clients entering an emergency shelter program, including safe, warm shelter, food, water, and other necessities for moms and their children. While families are transitioning out of survival mode, Clare House offers support and case management services to help guide families to permanent stability. Their existing facility had no outdoor space, and this pro-bono effort helped them raise funds for and construct a “play garden” on an adjacent residential lot to provide a safe space to relax, play, grow, and experience nature. As a community that supports those in need, this convenient space was an essential development for this important facility.

At Clare House, women with children and expectant mothers experiencing homelessness have mounting worries on their shoulders. They must work to move beyond their current situation and simultaneously take care of the needs of their children. On top of finding safe shelter, warm food, and clean clothes, moms at Clare House need to provide a secure place for their children to grow and play.

“Sometimes the park is too far away, and moms may not want to go out all the time when they are dealing with finances, childcare, or even depression,” shared a resident. Access to nature is crucial for a child’s development, fostering emotional and cognitive growth. Playtime outdoors allows children to explore, learn, and build social skills, while providing their mothers a much-needed respite.
