Juneau Cruise Ship Terminal

The Cruise Ship Terminal is a vital port facility for Juneau's waterfront, serving two cruise ship berths and acting as the gateway for over 200,000 visitors a year. The project needed to support larger Panamax ships, improve public access to the waterfront, reduce pedestrian and vehicular congestion, improve staging, and create an engaging gateway to the community. We provided uplands master planning, public engagement, permitting, and construction documents for this multi-phased project. By working with tour operators, the five-acre uplands were reconfigured entirely in association with new operations techniques that increased loading efficiency, reduced conflicts, and created more pedestrian space. These changes allowed the return of the waterfront to the public by developing an expansive public plaza surrounding a new visitor center, inclusion of landscape, and the extension of the SeaWalk. Site improvements included canopies, locations for public art, site furnishings, lighting, and the use of colored concrete paving to create and define public open space for this waterfront gateway to the community.
