Jenae’s Memorial Playground
Haines, Alaska, a small coastal community, was deeply affected by a massive landslide in December 2020. The slide claimed the lives of two residents and left a profound impact on the town. Among those lost was Jenae, a young kindergarten teacher known for taking students on field trips to explore, play, and learn from the natural environment. In response to the tragedy, the community rallied together to raise funds and lead a volunteer effort to improve their underused school playground.
We learned about this initiative and immediately volunteered to help plan and design the playground. Through numerous meetings, it became clear that the tot and kindergarten playground should be more than just a standard play area; it needed to be a place filled with discovery, engagement, and reflect the natural environment. This playground would serve as a place where imaginations connect with Haines’ unique characteristics, celebrating Jenae’s commitment to education, discovery, and play. Ultimately, this project would allow future students to connect with Jenae’s teaching philosophies and keep her memory alive.
