Victims of Violent Crime Memorial

Victims for Justice is the only organization in Alaska specializing in services to victims of violent crime outside of domestic violence and sexual assault. Since 1994, they have had an annual ceremony to add names to a memorial that recognizes victims of violent crime. With a 2016 redesign, this memorial now allows easier all-season access, enhances the park within which it lies, creates a place of remembrance for those killed, provides a welcoming and warm place for those with friends or family on the memorial, and provides a warm urban amenity for whoever might use it. Fourteen memorial columns allow a direct connection between living and deceased. The design is light and open, allowing good views within and out of the site. Tree and shrub plantings help define the space and reinforce how the memorial embraces visitors. Annual plantings create a beautiful garden that encourages people to come in and experience it. Seating provides a place of memory and respite. More importantly, the memorial and park show that a community cares.
