The Sitka Sound Science Center has a mission to increase understanding and awareness of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Gulf of Alaska through education and research. Corvus is providing environmental and interpretive design services for the Science Center and salmon hatchery. Recent engineering improvements to the historic building and hatchery included stabilization of slopes, streambanks and shorelines using rock fill. Corvus is restoring these areas through the reintroduction of native vegetation and using streambank best management practices to recreate a natural riparian habitat to support the hatchery fish. The restoration work also provides opportunities for interpretation and Corvus will be creating a series of graphic interpretive information panels to help educate visitors about the hatchery, the fish and the restored ecosystem.
