Location: Juneau, Alaska
Client: City and Borough of Juneau
Components: Master Planning, Park Design, Water Feature Design, Industrial Design, Planting Plan, Lighting Coordination, Construction Documents

This pocket park in the heart of downtown Juneau had fallen into disrepair and was an undesirable open space in the community. Mr. Mertl was tasked as a landscape architect to develop a new plan for the park and to work with the Native community to highlight the Tlingit culture and tell the story of Gunakadeit (a sea monster). Working with Tlingit artist Ray Peck, Mr. Mertl included a waterfall and series of pools along the perimeter of the park to help set the stage for the sea monster theme. A large Tlingit inspired ocean gate was developed as an entry into the underwater world while glass etched panels developed by Mr. Peck above the pools tells the story. Plant material was specially selected to mimic light reflecting off of water. Mr. Mertl was responsible for master planning, leading public involvement and the development of construction documents for this project. The park has become a popular open space for visitors and locals alike. The final installation of the glass art panels is expected in 2010.

This work was completed by Mr. Mertl while with Jensen Yorba Lot Architects in Juneau.
