Mr. Mertl was the lead landscape architect for the development of the Noyes Pavilion on the University of Alaska Southeast campus. Work included site analysis, mater planning, and site construction documents for the development of a new pavilion on the hillside overlooking the campus, with sweeping views of Auke Lake and the Mendenhall Glacier. In order to meet accessibility requirements on a steep site, a sweeping curved ramp and natural stone walls were used to connect the lower and upper courtyards. This connection provides a formal procession through the landscape rich with native and ornamental plants, and climaxes at the pavilion with its spectacular views. The pavilion has become a community destination and now hosts weddings every weekend during the summer months and numerous theatre performances during the school year. This work was completed by Mr. Mertl while with Jensen Yorba Lot Architects in Juneau.
