Kodiak High School

The Kodiak Island Borough School District is a rural, public school district located on the second largest island in the United States, with one high school. Outside of Kodiak, seven outlying Alaska Native rural villages on the island are accessible only by boat or small plane, and one community is accessible by road. We provided landscape architectural services for renovations to Kodiak High School, the vocation education facility, and its extensive site. Work included site analysis, programming, master planning, site design, and landscape design to create a safe and aesthetic learning environment that can withstand Kodiak’s harsh climate while minimizing maintenance. The plan included the creation of exterior spaces that are both visually exciting and withstand winter maintenance. The landscape uses local native materials that complement the modern building architecture and minimize maintenance. The project included an extensive public and stakeholder engagement process.
